Personally speaking I’ve always found lists to be an extremely helpful first step in almost any upcoming endeavor, in our case, it’ll help you realize if you are missing some items that you actually need to buy or fix, and that’s why you need to make your list way ahead of your departure date to give you more time to complete the list if you were forgetting any major points. Plus the added value of having any pre-stress diminished a bit and feel a little bit of a sense of achievement.

The first thing anyone should be taught about carbs is that there is a difference between the carbs in junk food and the carbs in healthy food.

If you like to enjoy chips and other assortments of packaged junk food, yeah those calories are not going to help you achieve/maintain your goal body weight.But you’ll find lentils, oats, potatoes, and fruits to be rich sources of carbs that are good for you.

Okay, so you’re downing a bottle of water mixed with cucumber, orange, and lemon slices with some mint leaves. Awesome, that’s super healthy right? Not if that’s the only source of nutrition that you’re getting during the day.

Juicing or Juice Cleanses are thought to be a good way to lose weight, which they can be a good support to losing weight, but not by themselves and certainly not as the only intake for your body over a long period of time.

But there definitely are some benefits to learning certain things from a young age; life lessons that will make the journey into your 30’s and beyond much easier if found within your 20’s or even your teens.

It is an inevitable fact of life that we will experience loss, and for many this can be one of the greatest reasons of fear and worry in life; the breaking heartache of that emptiness in your chest, a void unlike any other you experience in your life, when those that matter are gone from your life. It feels like something is missing, your brain tells you, and you seemingly can’t process it, it feels too unreal. This spiral and lack of acceptance are the very first steps to the long and dark road of escapism; be it at the bottom of a bottle or the last bit of bud, and the halt to any happiness and progress in life, though depending on the person not necessarily in every aspect of your life.

But take heart that those who are no longer with us live on through us, through their teachings and encouragement and the fruits of their labor, they live on.

And lastly, consider your relationship with pain, and what it means to you. If you consider pain as a harsh but undoubtedly successful teacher, you’ll be able to maneuver through the hardships with greater ease, and you’ll find that the void from loss fills quicker, allowing you to find resolution.

3. Seeking Acceptance

The trap of acceptance is a tricky one, because it begins from a very young age, and that can allow it to be accumulated into our norms without really considering its adverse effects. Be it when your parents take you to the playground for the first time, or the first day of elementary school, we begin a process to find friends, fit in, and commune with our social circle. But where is the line drawn between having friends and sacrificing who you are to fit in?

You’ll probably find many quotes online saying that the realest people don’t have many friends, and generally that’s true, because with authenticity comes the chance for incompatibility, and to find those that will accept and respect your genuine self is not an easy process. So what do you do? Well first you need to consider that if you have to conform and change who you are to be around someone, that isn’t friendship, that is control.

Second, accept that it might not happen during your 12 years of schooling, or at your job, or any of the places that your time is normally spent. We gravitate to the people who share similar interests, and if you want to find authentic like-minded individuals, you need to have the strength to pursue the aspects of life that you enjoy.

Most importantly, consider that seeking acceptance and approval of anyone other than yourself is a toxic and dangerous road. The opinions and ideas others have about you within their own mind should have no bearing on your thoughts and your personal satisfaction.

You spend 24 hours a day with yourself, everyone else varies. Consider the words of others when you know it comes from a point of constructive criticism or care, but if it’s just their own opinionated ideologies with no consideration of who you are and your own path in life, then that deserves to be tossed right out of your mind and into the garbage bin.

Survival is an overall lost art, save for those prepared and trained through the Military, and other jobs that give more brief survival training like Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians, the general populous wouldn’t know how to filter water to make it drinkable, build rain or cold proof shelter, or recognize edible flora or flammable fungi.

And it could be argued that there is no need for skills like that, but you know the old saying, ‘better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

That’s why we here at SolCal want to tell you about a few pieces of Survival gear that you should keep in your bug-out bag (that the bag you grab when you need to get out of dodge very fast) in-case of any unwanted scenarios.

  1. Water: Lifestraw

We can’t survive without water, but drinking unpurified water could put us in dangerous situations in when we’re in survival mode, and any instructor would tell you to always keep one of these bad-boys by your side at all times. Because in a case where you can’t stop to boil the water and then wait for it to cool down so you can drink it, a Lifestraw is your best bet at keeping hydrated. If you’re drinking 3 to 4 liters of water a day – the recommended daily value – one of these can last 250 to 330 days! That’s almost a year! Definitely a must have.

2.  Fire: Stormproof Matches and Magnesium Fire-starter

Now for this piece of equipment, it can come down to personal preference and how well you know the land, but generally you’ll want to keep two different types of fire starters on your person at all times. A box or two of stormproof matches is always a good and cheap option, because come rain or heavy wind, those things will burn. The other option you’ll want to consider is a magnesium fire-starter, also known as a flint and steel. It generally involves taking a rod of magnesium and striking it against a piece of steel to cause sparks which can be used to light up a birds-nest (not an actual birds nest, this is just a term for a bunch of flammable materials that you use to get a roaring campfire)

This one doesn’t really need a lot of explanation; it’s a sleeping bag or sleeping bag and tent combo. It keeps you warm, keeps bugs and snakes away from you at night, and will be your favorite place to snuggle after a long day of surviving. Just make sure that you check the dimensions and ensure that it’s not too big for you to carry around and at the same time not to small that you’ll have to curl up inside every time you want to sleep.

4.  Forage: KA-BAR Becker BK-7 Knife

 Calling this badass piece of survival gear just a knife is a travesty; this thing is pretty much a multipurpose tool. It can chop down logs, forage for fungi and hanging edibles, fight off predators, and all the while feeling like a total badass. This isn’t a tool for play though, the blade alone is 7 inches and with the handle at around 12-13 inches, it’s BIG. But no one can’t say that this knife isn’t super reliable and won’t get the job done out in the field.

5.  Navigation: Compass

Unless you can afford satellite Internet, you’re more than likely going to rely on a map and compass to get around and just to simply know where you are. Now long ago, most boat navigators and adventures could use the stars as points for navigation, but considering most people now use their phones to remember their friends’ birthdays and phone numbers, it’s unlikely the majority will invest in learning such an old skill. Thankfully we do have the timeless compass, you can find it as an app on your phone or as a physical tool you can buy for a few dollars. Highly essential, especially if you’re trying to get somewhere.

Pescetarian’s are those who do not eat any meat with the exception of fish. To explain in more depth, Pescetarian’s generally have a mostly vegan or vegetarian diet with the addition of seafood. The reasoning behind the acceptance of eating seafood is that some consider life in the sea not as meat because they are cold blooded, while others consider it a stepping stone on the way to being a full blown vegan or vegetarian. It definitely makes it an easy gateway for those who want to enter or simply try out the life of a non-meat eater.

A Vegan diet, or Veganism, is a type of vegetarian diet that removes all animal meats and animal

processed edible products –including eggs, dairy, gummy candy, white sugar, and other products- from an individual’s eating habits.Regular vegan food includes all grains, beans, legumes, vegetables and fruits and the nearly infinite number of foods made by combining them. Also due to the widespread popularity of veganism, many regular foods have been redesigned to be vegan friendly, such as ice cream, hot dogs, cheese, burgers, and plenty more.

Defining what a vegetarian can’t eat is easier than stating what they can, as their only prerequisite is that they do not eat any animal, be it on land, air, or under the sea.

4.  Paleo

The Paleo Diet, also known as the caveman diet, is a diet based only on foods that our hunter-gather ancestors could eat.

This means meat, herbs, nuts, and wild fruits and vegetables. The name Paleo comes from the Paleolithic Era, a prehistoric period of humanity when the most basic of stone tools were developed, about 2.6 million years ago.

The concept behind the Paleo Diet is pretty simple; we go back to how we’re biologically designed to eat. If you consider the entire existence of human life up until this point as a hundred-yard football field, you’ll find the first 90-95 yards can be considered the time where humanity spent as hunter-gathers, and our bodies adapted to that over hundreds of thousands of years, while that last half yard represents the time of humanity starting from the agricultural revolution and our shift from the average Homo Sapien of the past;  tall, muscular, agile, athletic, and incredibly versatile, to the average Homo Sapien of today; unhealthy, stressed out, sleep deprived, and afflicted by sound, light, and noise pollution.

It’s an interesting concept, and one that I’d suggest looking into and learning about.

Folks, the Presidential Elections are finally over and with it -depending on your feelings about these last two years of rallies, polls, speeches and what not- the end of a headache, or the beginning of one.
But have you ever thought if anyone has warned us about some of the short comings of today’s modern world? If there were transcendentalists that metaphorically saw through the veil of time and mentioned in their writings these certain aspects, ideals, and personalities that we should be wary and watch out for?
‘History Repeats Itself’, some may say, but others would argue that the only reason it repeats is because history is simply studied and not understood.
It’s the same difference as when you’re studying for an exam; if you simply memorize the answers instead of understanding the question, you’ll score well on the exam but after utilizing those memorize answers, they will begin to fade from memory.
Today we are going to talk about some authors that did not just memorize, these individuals understood the world and the happenings in it from the Pacific to the Indian Oceans.

  1. Aldous Huxley (July 26th, 1894 – November 22nd, 1963)

Aldous Leonard Huxley was an English writer, novelist, and philosopher. Most prominently known for his novels, such as Brave New World; a work of literary art that holds up even until today. A story set in a dystopian London where the citizens are too busy with their entertainment to perceive the unfair reality they live in. He’s also written non-fictional books, such as The Doors of Perceptions, a personal experience of Mr. Huxley whilst under the effects of a psychedelic drug, and a wide array of essays. Mr. Huxley was a humanist, pacifist, and satirist. He later became interested in spiritual subjects such as parapsychology and philosophical mysticism, in particular universalism. By the end of his life, Huxley was widely acknowledged as one of the pre-eminent intellectuals of his time.

He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in seven different years.

2.  Henry David Thoreau (July 12th, 1817 – May 6th, 1862)

Henry David Thoreau was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian. Let me just say that this man accomplished a whole damn lot in his life. He is best known as a notable figure in the transcendentalist movement, and for his authorship of Walden, the book details Thoreau’s experiences over the course of two years in a cabin he built near Walden Pond, close to Concord, Massachusetts, amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. The book chronicles his thoughts during those two years and his reflections of simple, sustainable living in natural surroundings. But the book is oh so more than just that, as even over a hundred years after its publishing, Thoreau’s words of society and the social norms that we have grown accustomed to still ring out true today as they did back then, and it was Thoreau’s philosophy of civil disobedience that influenced future leaders and revolutionists in their political thoughts and actions, such as Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr.

3.   Jack Kerouac (March 12nd, 1922 – October 21st, 1969)

This is a man I definitely would have been honored to meet at some healthy breakfast foods diner in San Diego. Jack probably would have been in the middle of another one of his adventures on the road.

Jack Kerouac was an American novelist and poet, a pioneer of the Beat Generation, a group of authors whose literature explored and influenced American culture in the post-World War II era.

His literary work covers topics such as Catholic spirituality, jazz, promiscuity, Buddhism, drugs, poverty, and travel. He was an underground celebrity, and one of the men that ultimately influenced the hippie movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s

He is best known for his book “On the Road”, a book based on Kerouac’s travels across America with his friends, some of whom are the other members of the Beat Generation.

Anger is a toxic emotion.

Such a statement might seem redundant because everyone knows that, but let’s be real with ourselves for a second, because once anger has its grips on you, and its poison begins to seep into your mind, you’re not really yourself anymore, are you?

Anger changes us in ways that can cause those closest to us to see not a loveable human being anymore, but a monster in human skin. The negative energy that washes off us in waves when we are angry only serves to bring down those around us. And if that anger is focused, it becomes a blade of white hot fire, searing the good vibes within its target, and perpetuating a cycle of negativity.

The important thing to remember when someone is angry at you, is that you yourself are not the one that is angry, that their anger doesn’t define your next action towards them or even after the altercation.

Probably one of the most wrongly pronounced and misspelled channels on YouTube, Kurzgesagt is, per their own words, ‘A small team who wants to make science look beautiful. Because it is beautiful.’

They touch upon topics most probably wouldn’t even consider thinking about for more than just a second, and their efforts should really be appreciated because they don’t just think about it, they try and provide an answer for it, and if educating isn’t something to be appreciated then I don’t know what should.

They’re known for their explanatory journalism and capacity to discuss topics of a varying range.  From explaining the mathematics behind ‘Fate’ to the Presidential Elections, to the Aleppo Crisis, they’re dedicated to the cause of spreading factual knowledge about world events, the mysteries most don’t even consider, and feed this content to the world through the Internet in a form of content that is easily processed.

Planning some fun in the sand and sun? Cut up one of these bad boys up, put the pieces in a Tupperware container, and place that in your cooler to take with you for a wonderful, healthy, cooling desert to go with your beach dinner in San Diego.

You’re also doing your body a favor as watermelon contains citrulline which your body converts to ammonia to keep stomach acid at healthy levels.

Cantaloupe and Honeydew Melon are also great alternatives/additives

There’s a reason we have the saying ‘cool as a cucumber’, and that’s really because they are a great food to keep you hydrated on those really sunny days. You can even make a very useful detox drink by mixing mint, lemon, and cucumber together; a combination that will help cleanse your body, and keep your cool. They’re also a great snack for diabetics due to having no sugar content.

This is one of my personal favorites as a kid; just sitting in front of the TV on a hot summer day, a bowl of cold grapes between my brother and I as we watch Toonami on Cartoon Network, good times.

These little numerous round fruits not only make the delicious wine you can have along with your dinner in San Diego, but also are a great way to keep you hydrated, and if you’re someone who loves to constantly snack like I do, there’s plenty of worse choices than grapes.

Probably the most underrated and least known of the ‘summer cool foods’

With a very high water content, and an awesome source of vitamin C that translates to them being abundant in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory capabilities.

The tasty, crispy, white interior goes great on almost any salad.

  • Mint

Anyone who’s had a mint or peppermint candy knows the cooling effect of menthol, which is why we had to add mint to this list of awesome stuff to keep you cool during the summer heat.

With a scent that can help invigorate you, especially if you’re feeling particularly lethargic due to the heat, and known for their ability to cool down and relax your body and mind, it makes sense that mint has been used for generations by herbalists to create basic medicine such as ointments to combat inflammation, and teas to soothe indigestion.

From Breakfast in San Diego to Summer Music Festivals across the USA

One of the best feelings in the world is putting on your headphones and walking down the street, head bopping to beat while the rest of the world is drowned out. Music is a powerful tool that can create vivid imaginative situations in your mind’s eye, or give you the energy to push yourself to do those last reps to failure.

The power of music has the ability to affect our emotions, our day dreams, our workouts, and adds a level of depth to anything it’s included with; just look at games, tv shows, and movies.

So in this summer heat, how about we leave the headphones off and instead appreciate the music loud and live at multiple destinations across the USA.

With the summer vacation coming to a close, let’s end it with a badass road trip to as many music festivals as possible!

But be sure to go get that healthy breakfast from your favorite restaurant in San Diego before you hit the road!

1.    Burning Man Festival

One of the most well-known annual festivals is the Burning Man Festival, a gathering of freethinkers, existentialists, those attuned to a devil-may-care attitude, and people who just want to vibe to some loud music.

The venue is the same place as usual at Black Rock City, deep in the desert of Nevada from August 28 to Sept 5.

With this year’s art workshop being DaVinci themed, you better act fast since the tickets are going out quick.

It’s definitely an experience you should consider once in your life.

2.    Made In America

Also known as MIA, the Made in America festival was founded by Jay-Z five years ago, and has since been an annual festial featuring high profile hip-hop and EDM artists.

This year, MIA will be at the end of the summer, from September 3rd to the 4th in Philadelphia, PA.

Wanna see Rhianna, Two Chainz, Lil Wayne, or Coldplay? Hit the road and go to the homeland of the Fresh Prince.

3.    Riot Fest Chicago & Denver

Gather ‘round, misfits, free spirits, and wanderers alike! Riot Fest Chicago and Riot Fest Denver are right around the corner!

With the festivities starting in Denver on September 2nd until the 4th with a line of of nineties rock nostalgia featuring Ween, Morrissey, the Deftones, and Sleater Kinney, and almost anyone will agree that this year’s Riot Fest is going to be extra special with the founding members of original horror punk band The Misfits reuniting in Riot Fest Chicago and Denver for a performance.

Then almost two weeks later, Chicago will get to rocking out from the 16th to the 18th of September, with performances byJulian Marley, the Hives, Rob Zombie, and many, many more.
