This isn’t a joke, what you’re doing to your body by staying up so late every night is harmful, but unfortunately sleep is generally taken for granted and isn’t as appreciated or understood as food and water.
Granted in this technology age where you could be freelancing for someone across the world – like a restaurant in San Diego – and so you work in a different time zone than your own, or simply just have online friends across the world and you want to spend plenty of time with them, it’s easier than ever to find ourselves in situations that leave us sleep deprived.
But this comes with serious risks to our wellbeing, such as increased susceptibility to diseases, weight gain, and loss of cognitive function.
Needless to say, lack of sleep can greatly hinder an individual, as your body is supposed to be tasked with preparing you for the next day, both physically and mentally during that time, and without those precious hours of Z’s, your body is basically thrown through the grinder with it getting worse with each progressive night without sleep.
But let’s see what happens exactly to specific parts of your body.
– Central Nervous System:
What happens to a computer or console left on for too long? It processes slower, heats up, and becomes likely to crash at any moment. Just like our nervous system when we become sleep deprived!Lack of sleep interferes with your ability to concentrate and learn new things. It can negatively impact both short-term and long-term memory. It gets in the way of your decision-making process and stifles creativity, and with a prolonged effect you’re at increased risk of hallucinations.
– Immune System
Know what a cytokine is? It’s what your immune system produces along with infection fighting antibodies to fight off bacteria and viruses.
When you’re sleep deprived, your immune system cannot really ensure your body’s antibodies are ready to fight for your health at full strength. This leaves your body more susceptible to foreign invaders looking to make your nose stuffy! And we all know how much everyone hates stuffy noses, almost as much as not finding food delivery online in San Diego for your late night Pokémon Go hunt.
– Respiratory System
Much similar to the Immune System, sleep deprivation makes you more vulnerable to respiratory problems like a cold and influenza.
– Digestive System
Sleep deprivation increases production of the stress hormone, cortisol, and lowers your levels of the ‘stomach full’ indicator hormone, Leptin, which tells your brain that you’ve had enough to eat. In addition, it raises levels of a biochemical called Ghrelin, which is an appetite stimulant.
No Sleep equals more stress, less accuracy of whether or not you’re full, and more likely to be hungry! Yay stress and binge eating!
– Cardiovascular System
Since what we already know about the effects of sleep deprivation on the digestive system makes you stressed, which can cause stress eating, and that Leptin, our ‘full’ indicator, doesn’t always work properly, and Ghrelin, an appetite stimulant, reaches higher levels, this can lead to weight gain and the complications that arise with it, such as high blood pressure, and heart disease risk.
All this pretty much tells us is that we really need to make sure we sleep well for our own sakes.
